Transparency flattening and image encoding: how AVIF becomes JPG

Decoding AVIF exposes a pixel canvas whose alpha then gets composited against an opaque background before JPG encoding. Because that transparency cannot be recovered afterward, edge color has to be judged against the real destination background. AVIF reading selects the primary AV1 image item and follows its color, alpha, depth, gain-map, transform, and sequence relationships inside the container. JPG output is always opaque and lossy, so judge it at high-contrast edges, gradients, fine texture, orientation, and any damage accumulated from repeated encoding.

Canvas decoded from a high-efficiency AV1-derived still image with HDR and alpha capabilities. Image written as lossy JPEG-compressed pixels optimized for photographs and broad compatibility.

The delivery decision for this AVIF to JPG route

JPG wins this route whenever its specific mix of compatibility, alpha, animation, and file size fits the destination better than AVIF does.

What changes between the AVIF model and the JPG deliverable

  • Alpha transparency that AVIF can carry has no equivalent in JPG; inspect how clear pixels are flattened.
  • Because JPG compresses lossily, verify the actual playback or viewing quality rather than assuming an unchanged size means an unchanged result.
  • Treat AVIF-specific metadata fields as optional in the JPG result until you have actually confirmed they survived.

Reading AVIF correctly and satisfying what JPG expects

AVIF

What can fail when AV1 Image File is interpreted

Older apps may not decode AVIF, and aggressive encoding can smear fine texture despite a small file.

JPG

What JPEG image cannot safely promise

Repeated encoding introduces ringing or blocks, and transparent areas must become opaque.

How the JPG writer handles this route

lossy JPEG-compressed pixels optimized for photographs and broad compatibility is what gets written, labeled as image/jpeg. Whether that actually opens depends on the receiving application, not on the file extension.

Acceptance evidence for the converted JPG

BEFORE

Record the AVIF evidence before conversion

Inspect gradients and texture at 100% and open the file on the oldest required device.

AFTER

Test the JPG file in its receiving workflow
