Demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation all run against the sensor-oriented X3F data before JPG encoding even starts. What comes out is a rendered photograph, never another untouched camera negative. The Sigma X3F path develops layered Foveon sensor information rather than applying a conventional color-filter-array demosaic used by most camera raws. JPG output is always opaque and lossy, so judge it at high-contrast edges, gradients, fine texture, orientation, and any damage accumulated from repeated encoding.
