SR2 to WebP: the camera-raw development and image encoding route explained

Demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation all run against the sensor-oriented SR2 data before WebP encoding even starts. What comes out is a rendered photograph, never another untouched camera negative. The older Sony SR2 reader uses generation-specific maker data and a matching body profile before converting its sensor array into full-color pixels. Because WebP can be lossy, lossless, transparent, or animated, confirm explicitly which mode was actually chosen, along with the oldest supported browser, edge quality, frames, color, and metadata.

Decoded canvas - Sony raw capture data from earlier Alpha camera generations. Written image - A modern web image supporting lossy or lossless pixels, alpha, and animation.

When to actually choose SR2 to WebP

Choose WebP when its particular balance of compatibility, alpha, animation, and file size matches the destination better than SR2.

What changes between the SR2 model and the WebP deliverable

  • WebP supports alpha transparency that SR2 never had, so any transparent areas in the result are newly created, not carried over from the source.
  • WebP can hold a timed animation, but SR2 has no frames to give it; expect a single still frame unless more source material is supplied.
  • Because WebP compresses lossily, verify the actual playback or viewing quality rather than assuming an unchanged size means an unchanged result.
  • Treat SR2-specific metadata fields as optional in the WebP result until you have actually confirmed they survived.

What the SR2 source carries and the WebP output demands

SR2

What can fail when SR2 camera raw image is interpreted

Older Sony color matrices and lens information may receive less testing than current ARW files.

WebP

What WebP image cannot safely promise

Legacy software may not open WebP, and lossy settings can blur texture or transparent edges.

ENGINE

How the WebP writer handles this route

The writer builds a modern web image supporting lossy or lossless pixels, alpha, and animation and labels the result as image/webp. The receiving application - Not the extension alone - Is the final compatibility test.

How to confirm the converted WebP actually works

BEFORE

Record the SR2 evidence before conversion

Compare white balance, skin tones, crop, highlight recovery, and metadata with Sony's reference output.

AFTER

Test the WebP file in its receiving workflow

Check the encoding mode, animation frames, transparency, gradients, and oldest required browser.
