How RAF turns into PSD: camera-raw development and image encoding

The sensor-oriented RAF data is developed into display pixels using demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation before PSD encoding. That makes the result a rendered photograph, not another untouched camera negative. The RAF reader accounts for the Fujifilm sensor arrangement and camera metadata before demosaicing, cropping, and mapping the capture into display color. PSD output aims to retain a Photoshop-style composite and editable layers, masks, channels, effects, text, and color data instead of only one flattened bitmap.

Canvas decoded from Fujifilm raw sensor data including camera settings and, for many cameras, a non-Bayer color filter layout. Image written as a Photoshop document that can contain layers, masks, channels, type, and adjustment data.

When to actually choose RAF to PSD

PSD wins this route whenever its specific mix of compatibility, alpha, animation, and file size fits the destination better than RAF does.

What changes between the RAF model and the PSD deliverable

  • PSD supports alpha transparency that RAF never had, so any transparent areas in the result are newly created, not carried over from the source.
  • PSD supports an editable object model RAF never had, so structure in the result is newly assigned by the writer, not carried over from the source.
  • RAF and PSD use different metadata conventions, so application-specific fields should be treated as optional until verified.

RAF source facts versus PSD output requirements

RAF

What can fail when RAF camera raw image is interpreted

X-Trans demosaicing, Film Simulations, and lens corrections differ noticeably between raw developers.

PSD

What PSD raster image cannot safely promise

Most non-PSD outputs flatten layers, while unsupported smart objects or effects may render differently.

ENGINE

How the PSD writer handles this route

The writer builds a Photoshop document that can contain layers, masks, channels, type, and adjustment data and labels the result as image/vnd.adobe.photoshop. The receiving application - Not the extension alone - Is the final compatibility test.

Checking the PSD result before you trust it

BEFORE

Record the RAF evidence before conversion

Inspect fine foliage, false color, skin tone, Film Simulation intent, highlights, crop, and lens geometry.

AFTER

Test the PSD file in its receiving workflow

Open the result in the intended editor and inspect layer count, masks, typography, blend modes, and canvas size.
