How RAF turns into GIF: camera-raw development and image encoding

Demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation all run against the sensor-oriented RAF data before GIF encoding even starts. What comes out is a rendered photograph, never another untouched camera negative. The RAF reader accounts for the Fujifilm sensor arrangement and camera metadata before demosaicing, cropping, and mapping the capture into display color. GIF output reduces frames to indexed palettes and binary transparency, so color selection, dithering, disposal, timing, loop seam, and absent audio define quality.

Decoded canvas - Fujifilm raw sensor data including camera settings and, for many cameras, a non-Bayer color filter layout. Written image - A frame animation or indexed-color image limited to a 256-color palette.

Deciding when RAF to GIF is the right conversion

Choose GIF when its particular balance of compatibility, alpha, animation, and file size matches the destination better than RAF.

What changes between the RAF model and the GIF deliverable

  • GIF supports alpha transparency that RAF never had, so any transparent areas in the result are newly created, not carried over from the source.
  • GIF can hold a timed animation, but RAF has no frames to give it; expect a single still frame unless more source material is supplied.
  • Treat RAF-specific metadata fields as optional in the GIF result until you have actually confirmed they survived.

What the RAF source carries and the GIF output demands

RAF

What can fail when RAF camera raw image is interpreted

X-Trans demosaicing, Film Simulations, and lens corrections differ noticeably between raw developers.

GIF

What Graphics Interchange Format cannot safely promise

Photographs and gradients can band, semi-transparent edges are reduced, and timing may be quantized.

ENGINE

How the GIF writer handles this route

Video-to-GIF output is sampled at 12 frames per second, capped at 960 pixels wide, and contains no audio.

Acceptance evidence for the converted GIF

BEFORE

Record the RAF evidence before conversion

Inspect fine foliage, false color, skin tone, Film Simulation intent, highlights, crop, and lens geometry.

AFTER

Test the GIF file in its receiving workflow

Play the full loop and inspect color banding, disposal between frames, transparency, and the loop seam.
