Free MOV to GIF conversion online, with the real frame sampling and palette reduction behavior, what gets lost, and a concrete way to check the output.
Converter.now samples the picture stream from MOV at 12 frames per second and scales wide footage to at most 960 pixels. It builds a palette-based GIF animation and removes audio because GIF cannot carry sound. QuickTime MOV input uses atom-based track and sample tables, including edit lists, rotation, color labels, timecode, chapters, and auxiliary media. Because GIF reduces every frame to an indexed palette with only on/off transparency, quality here comes down to color selection, dithering, disposal, timing, and the loop seam — with no audio at all.
Decoded from a QuickTime container written here with H.264 video and AAC audio. Encoded to an indexed-color animation or still image capped at a 256-color palette.
Used for editing and Apple-oriented video workflows.
Designed for short animations and simple graphics.
GIF fits a short silent loop that needs to autoplay inline with no video controls. Anything needing sound, real length, smooth motion, or photographic color belongs in MOV instead.
MOV support varies outside Apple and editing software, while source captions or extra tracks may not be retained.
Gradients and photographic tones can band, semi-transparent pixels get reduced to on/off transparency, and frame timing is rounded to the nearest centisecond.
The video-to-GIF path samples frames at 12 per second, caps width at 960 pixels, and drops audio entirely — GIF has no sound channel to carry it.
Scrub the timeline and verify frame size, frame rate, audio sync, color, and target-app playback.
Play the loop in full, watching for banding, transparency edges, frame disposal, and whether the loop seam is clean.
