The sensor-oriented PEF data is developed into display pixels using demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation before PSD encoding. That makes the result a rendered photograph, not another untouched camera negative. A PEF decode uses the Pentax model to select compression handling, sensor geometry, black level, white balance, and color calibration. PSD output aims to retain a Photoshop-style composite and editable layers, masks, channels, effects, text, and color data instead of only one flattened bitmap.
