How PEF turns into JPG: camera-raw development and image encoding

Demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation all run against the sensor-oriented PEF data before JPG encoding even starts. What comes out is a rendered photograph, never another untouched camera negative. A PEF decode uses the Pentax model to select compression handling, sensor geometry, black level, white balance, and color calibration. JPG delivery writes opaque, lossy photographic pixels; quality must be judged around high-contrast edges, gradients, fine texture, orientation, and repeated-encode damage.

Decoded canvas - Pentax raw sensor data with camera settings, preview, and model-specific color information. Written image - Lossy JPEG pixels tuned for photographic detail and near-universal compatibility.

When to actually choose PEF to JPG

Choose JPG when its particular balance of compatibility, alpha, animation, and file size matches the destination better than PEF.

What changes between the PEF model and the JPG deliverable

  • The JPG encoder can discard perceptual detail; the important test is the resulting image, motion, or sound - Not matching dimensions alone.
  • Metadata handling differs between PEF and JPG; do not assume every application-specific field carries across untouched.

PEF source facts versus JPG output requirements

PEF

What can fail when PEF camera raw image is interpreted

Custom Image settings, lens corrections, and compressed-raw details may not match Pentax's rendering.

JPG

What JPEG image cannot safely promise

Every additional JPEG encode adds more ringing and blocking around edges, and any transparency has to be flattened to an opaque background first.

How the JPG writer handles this route

lossy JPEG pixels tuned for photographic detail and near-universal compatibility is what gets written, labeled as image/jpeg. Whether that actually opens depends on the receiving application, not on the file extension.

Checking the JPG result before you trust it

BEFORE

Record the PEF evidence before conversion

Inspect white balance, greens, highlight recovery, distortion correction, crop, and EXIF.

AFTER

Test the JPG file in its receiving workflow

Compare faces, gradients, and high-contrast edges at full display size, and confirm transparent areas were flattened the way you expect.
