Convert NRW to PNG online. See the real camera-raw development and image encoding behavior, preservation limits, and a format-specific acceptance test.
Demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation all run against the sensor-oriented NRW data before PNG encoding even starts. What comes out is a rendered photograph, never another untouched camera negative. The NRW path uses Nikon compact-camera profiles rather than assuming that its smaller raw capture has the same decoding rules as every NEF. PNG delivery preserves exact raster samples with optional full alpha and color metadata, but file size, palette reduction, animation absence, and profile handling still vary.
Canvas decoded from Nikon compact-camera raw sensor data distinct from many DSLR-oriented NEF workflows. Image written as losslessly encoded pixels with full alpha transparency.
Used for retaining camera sensor data for photographic development.
Designed for lossless images and transparency.
Choose PNG when its particular balance of compatibility, alpha, animation, and file size matches the destination better than NRW.
A decoder that supports NEF may not apply the correct compact-camera profile or lens correction to NRW.
PNG is inefficient for many photographs, and indexed optimization can reduce a smooth palette even without JPEG-style loss.
The writer builds losslessly encoded pixels with full alpha transparency and labels the result as image/png. The receiving application - Not the extension alone - Is the final compatibility test.
