Camera-RAW development and image encoding: how K25 becomes PNG

Demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation all run against the sensor-oriented K25 data before PNG encoding even starts. What comes out is a rendered photograph, never another untouched camera negative. The K25 reader uses early Kodak DC25 assumptions to establish channel arrangement, dimensions, orientation, and the limited capture metadata available. PNG delivery preserves exact raster samples with optional full alpha and color metadata, but file size, palette reduction, animation absence, and profile handling still vary.

The delivery decision for this K25 to PNG route

Choose PNG when its particular balance of compatibility, alpha, animation, and file size matches the destination better than K25.

What changes between the K25 model and the PNG deliverable

  • PNG supports alpha transparency that K25 never had, so any transparent areas in the result are newly created, not carried over from the source.
  • Treat K25-specific metadata fields as optional in the PNG result until you have actually confirmed they survived.

What the K25 source carries and the PNG output demands

K25

What can fail when K25 camera raw image is interpreted

Very old camera assumptions and limited decoder testing can affect dimensions, color, and orientation.

PNG

What Portable Network Graphics cannot safely promise

PNG is a poor fit for photographic detail, and even without any JPEG-style loss, palette reduction can visibly simplify a smooth gradient.

ENGINE

How the PNG writer handles this route

The writer builds pixels written losslessly with a full alpha channel available and labels the result as image/png. The receiving application - Not the extension alone - Is the final compatibility test.

Acceptance evidence for the converted PNG

BEFORE

Record the K25 evidence before conversion

Compare against a known DC25 reference and verify full dimensions, channel balance, rotation, and capture date.

AFTER

Test the PNG file in its receiving workflow

Zoom to 100% on transparent edges, gradients, and small text, and confirm the exact pixel dimensions.
