Demosaicing, white balance, tone, orientation, and color interpretation all run against the sensor-oriented DCS data before JPG encoding even starts. What comes out is a rendered photograph, never another untouched camera negative. The early Kodak DCS path relies on model-specific geometry and color calibration before producing a modern full-color pixel canvas. JPG delivery writes opaque, lossy photographic pixels; quality must be judged around high-contrast edges, gradients, fine texture, orientation, and repeated-encode damage.
