Convert ALAC to FLAC online and see exactly what timed-stream transcoding changes, what FLAC still can't promise, and how to verify the result.
Converter.now decodes the waveform and channel layout carried by ALAC, then writes the codec and container profile used for FLAC. Duration can remain identical while compression, channel mapping, frame cadence, metadata, or auxiliary streams change. ALAC arrives as losslessly coded Apple audio whose frame configuration, channel layout, sample depth, timing, and MP4-family tags are decoded independently. FLAC output losslessly codes decoded samples and supports rich comments, yet it cannot reconstruct fidelity already removed by a lossy source codec.
Decoded media - Apple Lossless Audio Codec frames that preserve decoded samples while reducing PCM storage. Encoded delivery profile - Losslessly compressed audio that preserves decoded samples and supports rich tags.
Used for music, speech, and time-based sound.
Designed for lossless music archiving.
An elementary or unfamiliar ALAC container may have weaker player support than ALAC inside M4A, and tags can move.
FLAC does not make a lossy source lossless again, and some basic players reject less common sample rates or channel layouts.
The verified FLAC profile uses lossless compression level 8; it preserves decoded samples rather than source codec data.
Verify lossless decoding, container, sample rate, bit depth, channels, duration, gapless playback, and metadata.
Compare duration, sample rate, channels, peak levels, and tags with the decoded source.
Switch to FLAC only once the destination player, editor, or service has confirmed support for its exact container and codecs. If extra tracks or the original encoding must survive, ALAC remains the safer choice.
